Day 6 - Thu Dec 25, 2008
Big Bend, TX to Del Rio, TX - 370 mi
Packed up camp in the morning and planned to head to Big Bend National Park. On the way I came by the Rio Grande as it cuts through the steep canyon. Quite a sight! It's not nearly as big as I thought it would be, I'm always amazed at how easy it would be to cross an international border, though I'm sure there were unseen eyes watching for people that do that.
When I got to the park entrance I was dismayed to find that it was a $20 entry fee. That is really excessive. My plan had been to drive through the park, camp for a night, then drive out the north end. However, $20 for that seems unjustified to me. The state park had been $3 entry and $8/night to camp. That's much more reasonable. So, I decided to not give them my money, turned around, and headed north to the highway.
At the end of the day I was getting tired, and thought about staying in Alpine, but decided against it. That ended up being a mistake, the next town with a motel ended up being 204 miles away! Fortunately at the very end I crossed the Pecos River at an excellent bridge.
