Day 7 - Fri Dec 26, 2008
Del Rio, TX to Laredo, TX - 194 mi
Heading south and following the Rio Grande I followed the route the mapping software gave me. After about a half hour, signs informed me that the road was going to end! I checked the map and it seemed to continue just fine. The gate was open, and the dirt road beyond seemed all right. Not one to give up in the face of a little obstacle, I decided to forge on ahead. That turned into a two hour, 50 mile dirt road. Twice I saw border patrol trucks, but they were both pulling drags to maintain the road, and neither one stopped me. It wasn't until 1/4 mile before the pavement started back up that one finally gave me chase. He followed right behind me, then I saw another truck up ahead do a u-turn and pull off to the side. Right after that they both turned on their lights and I pulled over. I'm positive I'm the only Mini Cooper that has ever driven that road. They asked if I was working, I said no, my map said the whole road was paved! He looked over, chuckled, and said "that must have been a long drive". I heartily agreed and he let me continue on my way.
Only 20 more miles or so was Laredo, where I had two points of interest from google earth. Just north of town was a proving ground for a tire company, I think. I was hoping I could see the banked track or something, but the only vantage points I could find didn't show me anything.
Right by Texas A&M university on google earth is a lake with a crashed DC-3 plane on the shore. Unfortunately, that too wasn't there in real life.
