Day 9 - Kingsville, TX to Port Arthur, TX

Day 9 - Sun Dec 28, 2008

Kingsville, TX to Port Arthur, TX - 360 mi

Leaving Corpus Christi

Wind turbines are huge!

A nice drive up the coast, the "nature preserve" was disgustingly polluted though.

The destruction on the coast headed towards and through Galveston really blew me away. Collapsed houses everywhere, foundations only, piles of debris. I went down a "local access only" road that was extensively washed out. A whole section was just gone and they rerouted the traffic directly onto the sand by the water.

Right in the city of Galveston there's was some notable damage. A pier had a truck that had been blown onto it.

The ferry across Galveston channel went by a listing museum ship, and a sunken concrete ship.

On the other side of the ferry was some of the worst hit areas. Hurricane Ike had hit three months before and there has been very little cleanup. Just debris bulldozed off the road. It's really unbelievable how much is lost from a big hurricane.

And finally at the motel instead of quietly and respectfully putting the bible in a drawer, this one was prominently displayed right on the main table. I found it offensive.
