Day 1 - December 19, 2009
Los Angeles to Jalama Beach - 187 mi
Started in Orange County, took the 10 over to PCH in Santa Monica. One of the clearest days I can remember in the area. All the mountains were clear, all the way up the coast to Malibu, even all the islands were easy to see.
While driving I saw a big concrete dainage box hanging out over the beach, so I stopped and explored. The bottom had fallen off, it looks like they built it before the waves had eroded the beach back.
Point Mugu in Oxnard has a bunch of missiles on display, most of them were tested there by shooting them into the pacific.
Stopped by Gaviota Beach and checked out he huge railway bridge. Point Conception is 14 miles west of Gaviota, so I was hoping to avoid the 1 and stick to the coastline. Unfortunately, it's all private property and the roads are closed. So I had to go back to the 1 and go all the way around.
Off of the 1 is Jalama Beach which is a campground right on the Pacific Ocean. During the summer it is incredibly crowded, and they only give out camp sites on a first come, first serve basis. So people get there at 7am to get in line. During the winter it's deserted so I was able to pick any spot I wanted. The campsite is just north of Point Conception, so I decided to try to walk there before the sun set. I made it a few miles to the point that I could see from camp, but it turned out to only be about 1/3 of the way there. The roads that take you right there are all private property.
