Day 3 - December 21, 2009

Big Sur to Palo Alto - 118 mi

Woke up early, opened the tent and laid there for a bit watching the river from the sleeping bag. Three other campers had showed up during the night, so I tried to be quiet so early. Ate breakfast and broke camp. Just as I was collapsing the tent it started to rain. As I left camp it started to pour on the remaining campers :)

Headed north to Pebble Beach. Turns out they've closed off the town, and the only way to get in is to pay a $10 entry fee. What the hell? How is that legal?

So went straight to Monterey, the aquarium opens at 10am, and I was about the 10th person in. The best part was the jellyfishes! Hundreds of them! Also the tiny bioluminecent deep sea fish were great.

The Monterey Bay looks flat, but it's the start of a Grand Canyon sized underwater canyon! Just 10 miles off shore it gets down to 7,600 feet deep.

Then headed up to Santa Cruz to find the Blue Whale skeleton that I had found on Google Earth. It's huge! The width of the tail is as long as the mini!

Then went up the 17 to Palo Alto.
