Day 7 - December 25, 2009
Bodega Bay to Arcata - 272 mi
I woke up before the sun and got going. I wanted some breakfast, but they weren't open at 7am on Christmas Morning... So instead I headed up the 1 towards my first stop, Ft Ross. They're open every day, except Christmas. So I parked on the highway and snuck in. The fort was still pretty impressive from the outside. After walking all the way around, I saw a vulture perched atop the Russian Orthodox cross on the chapel.
Richardson Grove is a great grove of Coast Redwood trees just off the 101.
Avenue of the Giants is a nice scenic drive through the redwoods that parallels the 101. Remember the scene from Endor? It's like that.
The Drive-Through-Tree was also closed, and they had several "no trespassing" signs. I jumped the gate and walked in a ways, but I couldn't find the tree :(
The Scotia Lumber Mill was supposed to have a tour, but apparently it wasn't open on Christmas day...
Humbolt State University is in Arcata and has a nice campus that they're expanding.
I called my cousin to see what their christmas dinner plans were, turns out she was at my other cousins house back in Eureka. So I turned around and headed there for dinner, then back to Arcata to spend the night.
