Day 8 - December 26, 2009
Arcata to Ashland - 200 mi
Arcata has a railroad bridge that's been converted into a pedestrian walkway. It looked much cooler on the internet... I'm sure they put up the chain link fences to keep people from climbing on the structure. In my opinion, make the place look better and put up a more reasonable fence.
The Klamath River meets the sea in an impressive way. At the mouth of the river, the water turns a turquoise blue from all the sediment. Then a section of lighter blue, then finally the deep blue of the rest of the ocean. I tried to find a way down to the beach, but there didn't seem to be an easy way.
Saw some elk grazing in someone's front yard, just off the road!
Turns out that a long time ago a huge storm washed out the bridge. The old concrete bears were all that's left of it.
My family stayed at the Smith River in the Redwoods many times growing up. I found the section where we started a several mile float down the river, the water was really clear and just as I remembered.
Just over the Oregon border is the Oregon Caves, but unfortunately it's closed for the winter.
When I got back to the Rogue Valley a lot of the trees had iced over. Apparently it had been foggy but freezing, so ice crystals had formed on everything.
Finally made it to Ashland! Turns out Andrew, who I met up with in Austin on last years new years trip, was in town so we all got together for dinner.
